Northern Ireland's rules, in short
Hazardous waste in Northern Ireland runs under the Hazardous Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) runs those rules day to day, for the environment department (DAERA).
- Every move needs a note. Hazardous waste cannot leave a site without a correct consignment note travelling with it, carrying its NIEA code.
- Keep it for at least three years. Everyone in the move holds their copy for at least three years from the day the waste moved.
- Be ready to show it. Records have to be there when the NIEA asks. A note you cannot find counts against you, even if the waste was handled properly.
